Sink Stopper Not Sealing

But sink stoppers fail. This is a repair you can do yourself. If the seal is cracked or brittle the stopper should be replaced. If a sink won t hold water look up behind the sink with a flashlight if needed to identify the following parts.

A sink stopper with a push pull rod control at the faucet is a great modern convenience. Check the rubber seal for damage and if necessary replace it. Lift the stopper out of the drain. The left photo fig.

Putty installation when you are installing a sink drain and decide to use plumber s putty you must wrap the putty around the sink s drain opening before you install the drain body. A sink stopper mechanism isn t difficult to understand. The lever hooks onto the stopper through a hole or hook on the bottom of a long plastic flange that s attached to the stopper. Make sure the flange is tightly.

If it s still in good condition you can reuse it. Fix a sink stopper. When you push or pull on the lift rod it activates a lever the extends through the drain tailpiece. Clear the stopper and rocker arm of hair and debris.

A seal made with plumber s putty may fail down the road if the putty becomes brittle and it cracks apart allowing water to pass through the seal. It s easy to fix a bathroom sink drain plug that s leaking. Move the linkage up or down to a different hole to adjust the stopper movement. Find replacement parts on amazon. Remove the clip that holds the link in place by squeezing the clip ends together. When they do they are often unsightly and an irritation. Reinstall the stopper and rocker arm.

Simply grip the stopper body and pull it out of the drain along with the hinged rocker arm. Inspect the rubber seal on the bottom of the stopper head. If the drain stopper is not moving or closing check the adjustable link. 1 shows the threads from the clicker assembly.

Remove the old seal and slip on a new one if needed.
